Vintage garb

Ahhh, ‘vintage’. For wine connoisseurs, the phrase probably conjures up images of dusty wine bottles in an aging cellar; a bottle of “Chateau de poop” sat on a rustic looking table longing to be accompanied by a chunk of crusty baguette.  For car enthusiasts, we’re talking more 1950’s motorcar in British racing green, with little windscreen wipers and faded leather interiors.

But for a fashion lover, what does the term ‘vintage’ really say? Well for starters I think it’s a concept that’s bandied about a tad too easily. It holds this kind of prestige and so people are just DYING to tell you that the polka-dot skirt they picked up from Help The Aged for 50p is in fact ‘ a little vintage number’. What they really meant was “it was cheap and had been worn before, I’m not going to tell you it’s last year’s Primark, I’m going to have you believe I dug it out of some little treasure trove in a trendy back alley in Brixton”. Do I sound ranty? I don’t mean to be. I just mean you KNOW when you’ve found real vintage. And I think that’s something to be cherished.

Equally, I’m not saying that charity-shopping is any less worthy of attention or said ‘prestige’, flippin’ heck some of the best stuff I’ve bought has cost me less than a McDonald’s and been from Oxfam. I’m just saying, you know, vintage items feel kind of special, don’t they? Like you’re holding onto a little bit of a forgotten era.

Enough of the Disney crap, time for a bath.

What are your thoughts on vintage clothing, do you rate it over charity shop finds?

Monday Bargain-Fest: Ashley Olsen!

Yeah, yeah it’s Tuesday… hush up!

(FYI: Ashley is on the right… but you totally knew that)

Oh, Miss Ashley. Mary-Kate may be the more “popular” twin, but I will forever love you for your timeless elegance, button nose and IRRESISTIBLE style. Right, enough of the love lament, on with the clothes!

Et voila! I know the trousers aren’t strictly the right colour but Herringbone-wise it’s all there. Also, I searched high and low for an acid orange clutch to no avail, if anyone finds one let me know! I’m not a MASSIVE fan of the cross pendant I found but all the suitable gold options available were extremely expensive (again, let me know if you find an affordable one).

Anyways, here’s a look Miss Ashley herself would be proud of, hope you liked!

Guilty Pleasures

Christmas is nearly upon us and it’s definitely a time for self indulgence and doing naughty things (ooer). With that in mind, I’ve decided to make a guilty pleasures list encompassing a variety of subject areas. Sounds comprehensive but believe me it isn’t, I’m just too tired to blog about blinking pre-xmas sales and battle with wordpress’ ludicrous picture inserting system… woyoyoy it’s a hard life right?

Get on with it! (I hear you cry)…

Music – I’m an indie kid through and through but in my youth, i.e. from the age of 13-16, I was massively into old school hip-hop and rnb. Nowadays I tend to *secretly* bop to poppy, badly-written, generic rubbish. Safe to say if these songs came on at the Plug (Sheffield’s scuzziest clubbing establishment) I would be OUT on that dancefloor…

  • Dj got us falling in love again – Usher/Pitbull
  • Sexy bitch – Akon/David Guetta
  • Dynamite – Taio Cruz
  • Commander – Kelly Rowland

Food – I TRY to stick to a fairly balanced diet (hey, Supernoodles can be included in this) but I have a few little snackettes I can’t resist…

  • Philadelphia on toast with salsa
  • Nutella and strawberry toasties
  • Chinese chicken pizza
  • Bacon Supernoodles (oh god I could literally eat packets and packets of these)

Places – the cliched places that everyone lurves but are still fairly groovy…

  • Topshop (could spend hours and hours wandering around, annoying the sales assistants with questions)
  • Oxford Street
  • Brighton beach (who needs annoying sand when you have pretty pebbles that you can collect/make pebble angels in?)
  • My bed (duh)

Things to do when bored – hope it’s not just me who does these fairly guilty and POINTLESS things when boredom strikes…

  • Facebook stalk (come ON… it can’t just be me who checks his wall constantly and gets ridiculously excited/guilty when he pops up on chat EXACTLY at the moment when you’re flicking through his tagged photos??)
  • Buy stuff on ebay (I didn’t NEED the jewel-encrusted owl cocktail ring but I WANTED it)
  • Make interesting sandwich concoctions (peanut butter, nutella and smarties, anyone?)
  • Perfect Rihanna’s Jamaican accent in “What’s My Name” and “Cheers (Drink to That)”… truly is just me that does this I think. I literally sat for about an hour yesterday crooning “heyy boyy I rilly wanna see if you cahn gooh down town wid a gyal like me” (rudimentary phonetic transcription there).

Aaaanyways I feel I have embarrassed myself enough now. Time to finish watching SATC and get excited that it’s Christmas eve tomorrow (today in fact!)

Do you do any of the things above (if you do the Rihanna thing I swear to god you’ll get a mention in the next post) or are there any other guilty pleasures you like to indulge in?

p.s. In case you havenae worked it out already, I have twitter! Get following here. I tweet on a regular basis about the little goings on I encounter and such 🙂

p.p.s. Would be lovely to know who reads on a regular basis (if there is anyone) so if you like, follow me on bloglovin’ or comment, I promise I’ll write back! I’m in the process of working out how to put in an RSS Feed so people can follow on google reader. I’m not the most technologically capable so if anyone knows how to do that and also how to see how many followers I have on there that would be splendiferous! 🙂

P-PCAA (Peter-Pan Collar Addicts Anonymous)

Don’t think that acronym is going to catch on…

Regardless of this, I feel like I need to share my dirty secret. *deep breaths* My name is Lesley-Jane and I am a Peter-Pan Collar Addict. There, that wasn’t so hard.

Seriously though, it’s becoming a bit ridiculous. No matter what it is, if it has a P-PC (do I NEED to explain?) then I will happily fall in love with it.

In lieu of this, here are my top 10 high-street P-PC purchases. I realise this is a tad excessive but please, I can’t choose just 5!!

We’ll kick off with a few of the best Topshop offerings (they too share my addiction and seem to be making sure EVERYTHING has a P-PC):

Click the pictures for linkage 🙂

(apologies for weird sizing issues… WHAT is up with      inserting pictures atm??)

Onto New Look, a fashion retailer that have REALLY upped their game recently. I used to be disheartened with the stuff they produced, reserving that shop in my mind as a kind of haven for all things pre-teen and ill-fitting. Anyway, POINT IS…they have a few lovely pieces in right now so you should definitely go and have a look:

Lily recently featured this blouse in an outfit post and it looks gorgeous on!

Next up: River Island! Another shop that wavers in quality of style and design. I don’t know, River Island and I have an odd relationship but when they get it right, BOY do they get it right:

Oh bugger off, size issues!!!

Warehouse next, don’t really peruse their site or shop much. Fairly bland pieces whenever I do but I am fond of this P-PC attempt:

And last but not least (drum roll please)… Urban Outfitters!! Man I love this shop, too bad the prices are fairly out of my reach (unless I REALLY abuse my student loan). I’ll leave you with two of their fantastic and totally wearable P-PC pieces:

So there you have it, P-PC porn in all its beauty. Apologies for weird sizing, I’m FAR too tired to sort it out.

Lesley-Jane x

Which P-PC items are you loving right now and do you ever think the term “P-PC” will catch on?!?!?

p.s. Some of the pictures aren’t linking to the sites properly (don’t know why). If you want to know where they’re from, just go to the shop website and type in peter-pan collar into the search bar… should be able to find the item and other such beauties pretty easily that way. Apologies for WordPress’s general rubbishness today 😦 xxx

Xmas lust list (i.e. stuffs I want from Topshop)

Bonjour all!

Christmas has arrived at East Slope; the baubles are up, the tinsel is out and the (stolen) christmas tree is propped up against the fridge. Now, when I say stolen, I mean… well I didn’t want to ask as to the origin of the tree actually. It’s best to just nod and smile.

In an attempt to procrastinate productively (oxymoron?) I decided to have a bit of a snoop on the Topshop website in order to get inspiration for future purchases with christmas money (that no doubt my parents are expecting I will spend on food and new textbooks). Mummy dearest has said she’ll get me a Topshop card for chrimboli though so perhaps I wont feel TOO guilty next time I drool over any of the lovelies from above.

I don’t know why polyvore insists on listing items in a mixture of dollars and pounds? They do say variety is the spice of life…

I was going to do a little Mac lust-list too but once again polyvore is playing silly buggers and inverts the colour scheme whenever I attempt to clip pictures. Never mind. Will try to sort this at a later date.

I’m really determined to de-clutter my wardrobe this christmas to make way for new pieces and just generally streamline my look a little more. I still wear things I bought years ago that I probably wouldn’t choose had I my time again (ooo I sound like Yoda). When I do I’ll be putting a lot of stuff on e-bay soooo watch out for linkage, lovelies 🙂

I also really want to start doing outfit posts. My photographer friend Julia has a great camera so I may bribe her into being my snapper (a Starbucks Mint Latte and some Bourbons should do the trick). In the long-run I do want to get my own camera and do it myself.

Lots of exciting plans for 2011 regarding my life, wardrobe and look. Can’t wait for things to get going! Now to tackle that massive pile of Italian verb conjugations… :S

Lesley-Jane x

ooo, little side-note, I had my friend Rachel to come and visit Brightonia this weekend which resulted in a massive photobooth sesh with Julia too.

Obligatory selection of snaps…

How do I love thee, Zara? Let me count the ways…

In the words of a Valley Girl..”Oh. My. Gawwwd!!”

Zara is online. Zara is online. ZARA IS ONLINE!!!

I’m a touch excited.

For the past few years, Zara have begun to climb my radar of high-street shops that are actually decent. There was always Topshop, but Topshop and I have a weird relationship in that I feel sometimes, it tries a bit TOO hard to be “edgy”; it forgets the value of quality, stylish basics. With Zara, it’s all about decent tailoring and WEARABLE pieces with a few “out there” designs thrown in for good measure. I’ve yet to find the Zara in Brighton but a quick trip to google maps will sort that out.

You know what else I’ve realised? Zara is like Chloe’s stylish little high-street sister (and they both have people names…spooky!). Believe me, if I had the cash, I’d be a Chloe girl. As I was flicking through Zara’s relatively new online store, I had this feeling like I recognised something. It took me a while but eventually it dawned on me that Zara really is my affordable solution to achieving my “Chloe-girl dream”. It’s not QUITE girly enough to also fulfil my secret suspicion that I’m somewhat of a “Stella McCartney-girl” too but hey, I can always hope a new high-street shop will come along soon.

So without further ado, here are a few of the pieces online at the moment that I’m lusting over.

Faux-fur Coat £69.99 (I checked it was definitely faux)

Get into my wardrobe you cheeky little coat. You tempt me with your furry ways and promises of protection against harsh Brighton sea-front weather.

Shirt-dress with Printed Skirt £35.99

I don’t know why but the Beauty and the Beast song started playing in my head when I spotted this. FRACK knows why… it looks nothing like Belle’s ball-gown. Oh, I’m an odd child.

Cargo Trousers with Zips £39.99

Hello, sexies. You would look ridiculous on my little legs but I want you, if only to admire you from afar in my wardrobe. *sigh*

Tee Shirt with Embroidered Strip £19.99

Oh you poor little lovely, I fear that less seasoned shoppers than I overlook you because of your plain-ness. Perhaps you are cast aside in favour of more “jazzy” pieces? Never fear, for I have a thing for intricate tees and that is why you will come home with me.

Moccasin with Tassels £39.99

I do declare, zee most perfect little shoe. I could have chosen an array of boots that would have been far more practical with encroaching winter weather but you know me: if there’s an unsuitable alternative, I’ll take it.

I should be worried that I “talk” to clothes like I’m trying to seduce a reluctant older man, right? I have a feeling a psychotherapist will be analysing these posts one day…
